Imperfect Produce is fighting food waste with a sustainable-based business model

Co-founder, Ben Simon created Imperfect Produce four years after after witnessing how much college students waste food.

Imperfect Produce, a subscription-based delivery service send “ugly” fruit and vegetables that are fresh on the inside but are not appealing to the larger population.

According to Imperfect Produce, “More than 20% of the fruits and vegetables grown in America never make it off the farm because they aren’t perfect enough for grocery store standards. This results in billions of pounds of wasted produce every year. We’re talking about produce that is just as nutritious and delicious but looks a little different.”

Fox 5 reports that the serviced launched in August 2015, and has more than 200,000 subscribers in 22 cities and 250 growers nationally with more than half of their supply.

The company has recovered 40 million pounds of waste and donated 2.2 million pounds to food banks. The company offers both produce and grocery items for customers and fighting food waste.

“The important part of running a company founded by Millennials is to use the role of business to look out for people and the planet,” said Simon. “As much as it’s about making a profit, we hope to elevate the conversation about food waste, climate change and creating an equitable food system.”
