Beef vs. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: The Green New Deal’s impact on beef’s uncertain future

Sustainability is an important topic especially because its practices will determine how companies and farms will grow food for the foreseeable future. New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Green New Deal, is addressing factory farming.

On Showtime’s Desus & Mero Show, Ocasio-Cortez said “It’s not to say you get rid of agriculture. It’s not to say we’re gonna force everybody to vegan or anything crazy like that. But it’s to say, ‘Listen, we gotta address factory farming. Maybe we shouldn’t be eating a hamburger for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

This viewpoint is not unsurprising considering discussions around methane gas and cattle. So her position is to get people to eat less beef to slow down climate issues.

According to Grist, farting cows are not the problem, but the space grass-fed beef takes up is one. In actuality, factory farming minimizes land use, shortens time for cattle growth and has a lower greenhouse gas footprint than pasture-raised cattle.

The fear surrounding the future of beef may have come from President Trump who tweeted that the new deal would “permanently eliminate” cows. Obviously, the fight between “old school” farming and “new school” environmental practices is not over and will continue onward.

May be farmers, companies, politicians and consumers will all meet in the middle to provide a feasible solution for beef and climate change. Only time will tell.
